trip to Mekedatu & Sangam

This is a description of our trip to Mekedatu and Sangam. Mekedatu means “Goat’s Leap”. The rocks are too close that even a goat can leap in between. Legend says that the rocks were much closer that even a goat could leap between them.

Sangam is the meeting place of rivers Arkavathy and Cauvery. It is 95kms from Bangalore. We started at 8am on Friday 21st March, 2008. It was drizzling from early morning and the climate was lazy and chill. A typical English weather – that’s my hubby’s remark. Our Journey was from R.T. Nagar. We moved via Brigade Road, touched Bannerghatta Road and proceeded to Kanakapura Road and then towards Sangam. Roads are not really good. Patch work is going on. We reached Sangam at 11am. Had tea from the one and only restaurant – Coconut Tree. Parked our vehicle inside the restaurant compound and walked to Sangam. There were lot of monkeys loitering around ‘Coconut Tree’. Kids enjoyed watching them- old, young, big, small, jumping around. Whole lot of monkeys.

On approaching Sangam, a big red warning board welcomed us. Beware of crocodiles and undercurrents. Please avoid swimming and advised us to take the advice of local residents. My son got scared when I read the warning about crocodiles. He didn’t get down for quite a while. We had to carry him. We crossed the river. It had knee depth water. A minibus was waiting on the other side for the travellers to be taken to Mekedatu.

Mekedatu is around 3-4 kms from sangam. The route is rocky and winding. We could get a glimpse of the forest and the rocky river. The river was getting narrower and deeper as we proceeded towards Mekedatu. Within 20 minutes we reached the spot. Then it was a downward journey. Few rock cut steps were there. But they got narrower as we went down. The surrounding rocks were smooth and slippery. To get a clear view of the river, we had to climb the rocks. The river was flowing with all its might. The scene was alarmingly exotic. We started climbing back. On our way, one family was carrying their shoes in a plastic carrier bag and it invited some monkeys which tried snatching the bag.

We had lunch from the Coconut Tree and again went to Sangam. Kids played in the river and others swimmed and had a gala time till evening. Our journey back to home started at 4pm from Sangam and we reached Bangalore at 9pm (courtesy to the bizarre traffic in Bangalore).

The place is littered with plastic and bottles. But it is a nice weekend getaway.
